| Birds of Prey |
| Introduction |
| Australia's birds of prey comprise
twenty four of the 292 species recognised worldwide and are collectively
known as raptors. (This tally does not include owls, which are superb
hunters.) Their strong legs, powerful clawed feet and distinctively hooked
bills placed on a bare, fleshy face readily sets them apart from other
birds. These features are all part of the raptors' predatory flesh-eating
habits. The Wedge-tailed Eagle is the largest of Australia's three eagles, with a wing-span of up to 2.3 metres and weighing between 2.5 and 4 kilograms. Females are 15-30 percent heavier than males. Bounties were offered at various times on eagles because of the number of lambs killed, but any predation on sheep is more than offset by the eagle's effect on the destructive rabbit population. Slightly smaller than the Wedge-tail is the White-bellied Sea Eagle, found around the coastline of Australia and along inland waterways. Its 2 metre wingspan carries it down to prey mostly on fish, but it also samples large birds, turtles, fruit bats and rabbits. The Black-shouldered Kite is among six kite species here, frequenting open woodland, grassland or cultivated areas across the entire continent except Tasmania. A smallish bird, it eats mainly rodents as well as small birds, lizards and insects. The Black or Fork-tailed Kite is something of a wanderer and is often seen scavenging in large flocks, identifiable by their distinctively shaped tail feathers. Found throughout the world, the Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird in the world through the air, reaching speeds of 250km per hour when diving on prey. While favouring rocky hills, mountains and cliffs, the Peregrine may also be found in urban areas. The Nankeen Kestrel gets its name from the brown colour of a cloth once imported from Nanking. Found in most habitats, it prefers open wood and grasslands, dropping from a hovering vantage point to pounce on mice and small birds. Though scarce in Tasmania it ranges up into New Guinea and Indonesia. The distinctive head feathers of the Crested Hawk, also known as the Pacific Baza, single it out as the only Australian raptor with such an adornment. Soaring just above the treetops it occasionally indulges in impressive tumbling display flights. Especially fond of tree frogs and stick insects, it will also try figs and other plant matter. Despite the occasional periods of persecution in the past, birds of prey are generally held in high regard and appear on shields and coats of arms to symbolise strength and prowess. |
