| Introduction |
| The Gippsland Lakes form the largest
inland waterway in Australia, covering 400 square kilometres. Fed by
rivers of the mountains and high plains in the hinterland, the lakes
system consists of a series of three lakes - Victoria, King and Wellington. These are linked by narrow channels and protected from the pounding ocean surf by a long ridge of sand dunes which form the splendid Ninety Mile Beach. The only outlet to the sea is at Lakes Entrance. Each waterway is different, some supporting little towns while others are untouched, only accessible by boat, being bordered by The Lakes National Park. The park is home to kangaroos, wallabies, emus and various water and forest birds. Many islands dot the Gippsland Lakes, the main ones being Rotamah, Raymond and Fraser. Rotamah is well-known as a bird observatory. Visitors can watch the prolific birdlife from the tree top or floating bird hide, or stick to the more conventional hide on firm ground. Rotamah also abounds in kangaroos which have become quite tame. Raymond Island is also home to abundant wildlife and is noted for its colony of koalas. Even though Fraser Island is more heavily settled than the other two, it too is home to numerous birds and animals. |
| Fauna |
| Many species of native mammals find
sanctuary in these mountains; koalas and kangaroos are common, but
echidnas and short-nosed bandicoots are also sighted occasionally. Over
200 species of birds have been recorded. Emus stalk the heathlands, eagles
and falcons soar over the cliffs, and the lakes and swamps are home for
waterfowl. Robins, wrens, cockatoos, currawongs, kookaburras, lorikeets
and honeyeaters also abound. The unique scenic splendour and the many
attractions of the Grampians make a visit to the area an unforgettable experience. Many visitors return again and again, for the Grampians always have something new and different to offer. |
| Halls Gap |
| The gateway to the Grampians, Halls
Gap, is the focal point for visitors to the area. It is 26 km from Stawell
and follows the valley formed by Fyans Creek, nestling between the peaks
and plateau of the Mt. William Range on one side and the Wonderland Range
on the other. The area is named after C.B. Hall who, following a path used by the Aborigines, discovered the "gap" between the ranges in 1841. Guidance regarding the nearby attractions is freely available from the Tourist Information Centre and the locally based Department of Conservation and Environment centre. |
| Northern Grampians |
| The northern reaches of the Grampians
tend to be a little warmer and drier than the other sections and feature
the Mt. Difficult range, with the dominating peak of Mt. Difficult. Mt.
Stapylton and Mt. Zero are the northernmost peaks, almost abutting onto
the Western Highway at Dadswells Bridge. Mt. Stapylton is renowned for its
vivid display of springtime wildflowers, which can appear a little earlier
than in the cooler parts of the range. North of Halls Gap on the Mt. Victory Road is Zumstein's Camping and picnic ground, delightfully situated on the McKenzie River, where kangaroos, accustomed to the total protection of the National Park, are quite friendly and approachable. Some other attractions of the northern section are Flat Rock and its art site, Golton Gorge, Hollow Mountain, the Beehive Falls and McKenzie Falls, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Victoria. Although not as well known as the area around Halls Gap, the Northern Grampians have an abundance of well marked walking trails and picnic spots. |
| South and West |
| The broad Victoria Valley, source of
the Glenelg River, lies between the Victoria Range to the west and the
Serra Range to the east. Stretching from Lake Bellfield almost to Dunkeld,
the Serra Range terminates abruptly at Mt. Sturgeon at its southernmost
point. While most of the valley is covered by woodland featuring river red gums, there are pockets of heath swamplands, notable for distinctive vegetation consisting mainly of sedges, heaths, grass-trees and button-grass. A forest road runs through the valley, which is a proclaimed sanctuary. Several vantage points in both ranges offer spectacular views. |
| Wildflowers |
| Botanists agree that there are over
1,000 species of recorded plant life in the Grampians, including nearly
200 species of wildflowers, some of the plants being confined to the
region. Some, such as the Pink Heath, the floral emblem of Victoria, may
flower all through the year; but the Pink Heath's glory culminates in the
spring blossoming, when its variety and colour are more spectacular than
anywhere else in the State. This wonderful and, in some ways, unique display of flowers is without doubt one of the major attractions of the Grampians National Park, and special wildflower gardens are developed for the added pleasure of the visitor. |
| Wonderland Range |
| The unique rock formations,
spectacular canyons and other features, caused in part by the differential
weathering of the basic quartz sandstone, make the Wonderland Range a
major highlight of the Grampians. Winding up the escarpment from Halls
Gap, the bitumen road passes Mackey's Peak and the Elephant Hide to the
turnoff leading to the Wonderland Turntable area. From this point, a walking track leads to the crest of the range, through the massive Grand Canyon, to the Whale's Mouth, Cool Chamber, Lady's Hat and along Silent Street to the Pinnacle Lookout, with its magnificent panorama of Fyans Valley and Lake Bellfield. Beyond the Pinnacle is the aptly named Nerve Test and further on, the Bellfield Peak. From the Peak there are alternative tracks, either to Lakeview Lookout, Mushroom Rock and the Sundial Turntable, or a walking track to Sundial Peak, Delley's Dell, and on through the forest of soft tree-ferns following Dairy Creek down past the delightful Silverband Falls, eventually meeting the Silverband Road near Lake Bellfield . |
